Daniel Radcliffe in horror films? Most of us will remember this young boy from the popular fantasy movies playing the role of innocent little Harry Potter. Lately, however, Radcliffe cannot be found engaging in adventures around Hogwarts. Instead, now he is the focus of evil spirits and malevolent forces haunting him. For the sake of nostalgia, I watched his new movies to see how he grew up after being a childhood star. And, I must say, it was about time for him to move on to new genres after playing young Harry Potter as a clearly full grown man in the latest sequels.
Radcliffe played a role in “Horns” (2013) which was a… very strange movie. The premise itself is quite far-fetched and based in fantasy. Everything seems normal and makes sense until he starts randomly growing horns from his forehead with no apparent cause. The devil/hell imagery exists strongly within this film after the introduction when an angry mob of townsfolk picket outside his house with signs telling him to “Go to hell.” We do not find out why they hate him so much until quite a bit later, so be prepared for confusion. Not only are we left in the dark for much of the movie, but there are several flashbacks and strange scenes that will shock and possibly even disturb some viewers. Overall, he plays an incredibly likable character, although nobody in the film seems to like him… There are quite a few plot twists and surprising character transformations, so I caution you when becoming attached to certain people—they are not always what their first impression seems. By the end of the movie, once everything came together and made sense, I can honestly say I enjoyed it and would watch it again.
